If you have a question about our canal boat holidays we may have answered it here. If not please get in touch and we’ll answer it for you.

Can I charge my phone or camera?

Our boats either have a 220v power system with standard 3 pin power sockets or we provide a small inverter. Both of these allow you to charge your mobile phone, camera, camcorder or laptop. The inverters may struggle to power a full size hairdryer. Electricity on your boat is provided by a bank of 3 or 4 batteries. The power in these is gradually drained during the evenings and any other time the engine is not running and electricity is being used. The batteries are recharged when the engine is running. To keep the batteries well charged we recommend running the engine for at least 6 hours per day.

Can I come and see the boats?

You are very welcome to visit us at all times during our opening hours. However please consider that our boats may not be at the base during the height of the cruising season so a telephone call to check may save a wasted journey.

Will our children be safe?

Yes. Our boats have guard rails around the external cockpit and we provide buoyancy aids. Cot sides for the beds are available on request for some of the boats. There is no charge for any of our safety equipment.

Should I book my canal holiday early?

By booking your canal holiday early you stand a greater chance of getting the boat you want during the dates you want. We usually have a special offer running for those people that want to book for the following year and so you’ll save money as well.

What clothes should I bring?

Storage space is limited on the boats so suitcases are not recommended. Depending on the time of the year will determine whether you bring just summer clothing or something for the cooler days. Don’t forget some rain wear (a set of waterproofs is supplied for the driver). Non slip footware is recommended as you will be stepping off the boat to work locks and visit pubs and shops.

Can I have my shopping delivered to you?

Yes, we have many guests who order their grocery shopping online and have it delivered to out base on the day of their arrival. We’ll even pack your shopping away for you. When ordering please remember that the fridge on-board is an ‘under the counter’ type and as such is limited to how much food it can hold.

Can we bring our pets?

We are pleased to allow your cat, dog or other small pet on board. If you wish to bring more than 2 pets there is a £30 charge to cover the cost of the extra cleaning involved. We also ask that you keep pets off the upholstery and bedding.

Is there car parking at the base?

Yes, we have outdoor parking space at our base. Please remember that parking is at the owners risk and is free of charge.

Do I need holiday insurance?

As with any holiday, you should purchase your own holiday insurance. We strongly recommend purchasing holiday insurance which includes cancellation insurance as, if you cancel and we cannot re-let the boat, you will be responsible for the balance of the holiday and no refunds will be made. Personal holiday insurance can be found by searching many of the price comparison websites.

I’ve never been on a canal boat, how will I know what to do?

At Claymoore we believe in giving you the best instruction in the equipment and handling of your boat so that your holiday is as enjoyable as possible. When you are ready to leave, a member of our team will travel a short way with you to instruct you on the control of your boat, the working of locks and some canal etiquette. When you feel comfortable, we step off to allow you the freedom to discover this wonderful world.

What is a canal holiday like?

In a word, relaxing. If you take off your watch time will become meaningless. The boats are easy to handle and the locks, whilst requiring some physical exertion, are simple to get to grips with. You will always find someone to lend you a hand or to give you a bit of friendly advice. In fact the one thing that may surprise you is the camaraderie that you will find amongst fellow boaters. If you live in a city you will be pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have a chat at the locks or say a simple ‘good morning’ as they pass by.

Do fuel and gas cost extra?

No. Both diesel fuel and Calor gas are included in the hire charge. Each boat is supplied with 2 or 3 Calor gas bottles, giving you plenty of gas for your holiday. These are stored in the gas locker in the bow of the boat (except Ruby Tuesday and Moore Hall which are in the rear) and are connected to an automatic change-over valve to give a continuous supply. The Calor gas supplies your cooker and central heating.

All of our boats are thoroughly cleaned and serviced between trips and we make every effort to keep our standards high.

What are your boats like?

Our fleet of steel-hull narrowboats are 6’10″ wide and less than 2′ draft, which allows navigation on any part of the inland waterways system. The large rear deck, with room for the whole crew, allows your party to be together even when underway. There is full headroom throughout the boat. Showers and flushing toilets are provided on all boats and for your privacy each cabin is separated by a door (except on our boat for 2 Moore Hall).

All of our boats are centrally heated with gas fired or diesel boilers and hot water radiators. There is a generous inventory of blankets pillows and freshly laundered bed linen and duvets. Tableware, cutlery, saucepans, frying pans, roasting pans and other kitchen utensils are all provided. The saloon is fitted with a radio/CD player and a TV with Freeview. All of our narrowboats are powered by a water cooled marine diesel engine, with single lever control and electric start. Large diesel tanks contain enough fuel for two weeks cruising.
